Here's a face you'll never forget...

Every face tells a story

"Art is the child of nature in whom we trace the features of the mothers face."

                                - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

In this case the "art" is grape, the "child" is the vine and the "mother's face" is that of the grower.
Look at these guys.

Go ahead.  Take a long and hard look.
I see trust.  I see passion.  I see hard work.  I see three dudes who can grow some pretty ridiculous Tinta de Toro aka Tempranillo.  What do you see?

Here's one more face to look at.  Here, I see genius.  He's the rockstar winemaker who deals with those three  Spanish farmers pictured above.

His name is Raul Acha.  He belongs to the current generation of a family that has been linked to the world of wine for over two centuries.  Raul was born in La Rioja, where he has lived surrounded by vineyards since his childhood.  He defines himself as a winegrower, and in his philosophy, as in his ancestors', he defends the vineyard as the main source of quality for wine.

Spain's wine region Toro has two ingredients that have always attracted the attention of Raul.   On the one hand, it is an area that traditionally has not interfered with the vineyard too much.  On the other hand, there are old vineyards of extraordinary quality.

 All Organic...

Thanks to the climate conditions, with low humidity, and sandy soils there is no need to apply any chemical treatments to avoid diseases as other places do.  This may have contributed to the tradition of respecting the pace and allowing nature to play its role.  The tradition is such that there is a firm commitment to organic wines and biodynamic agriculture.  This philosophy matches Raul Acha's perspective to perfection.

As you'll see below Raul Acha was so impressed with his growers fruit that he threw their faces on his wines!  The bottle labels are used in a very clever and innovative way to show you the age of the vines from the Matsu Vineyards.

Roughly translated El Picaro means "the rogue" or "cheeky one" (vines 90 years old);  El Recio "the tough one" (90-100 years); and El Viejo "the old one" (vines 100+ years old).

Tasting Notes
This wine has a great robe and a profound color, an expression of its young age. It has an intense aroma where you'll find dark fruits such as blackberries and blueberries, mineral notes also appear, creating this fresh wine with complexity.  On the palate again this wine dominates the fruitful sensations, perceived as a wine with body; though at the same time its leaves pleasant licorice notes contributed by the maturity of the grapes from which this wine is made.

Tasting Notes
This is an opulent wine that shows a lot of finesse, with an intense nose having notes of chocolate, black fruits and vanilla.  In the mouth the taste is striking, being predominantly round and silky, very unctuous with subtle hints of the glycerine.  Touches of red fruits linger in the after taste as do mineral notes.  This is a full body wine yet at the same time very easy to drink.

$34.99 with 6-pack Sampler Case Purchase!

100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo)

Winemaking
Unfiltered.  Fermentation and maceration during 3 weeks in reinforced concrete tanks. The malolactic fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels, as its aging during 16 months.  480 cases produced.

Tasting Notes
A deep cherry color with violet colored notes in its border. Thanks to the barrel aging the wine acquired a very intense nose with mature black fruit aromas, well integrated with the toasted, spiced and smoked notes. Lush and velveted in the mouth with very mature and round tannins that give its sweetness.  In the long and persistent finish appear once again mature fruit perfectly assembled with the roasted character of the wood.

94 Points from PARKER!

Robert Parker's taster for Spain, Neal Martin, awards the wine 94 points placing it alongside wines from Toro that are up to four times more expensive than El Viejo!

Martin said "this is undoubtedly a sophisticated Toro red to which I am sure the elderly gentleman on the label would approve". "It does have a beautifully defined bouquet, the oak assimilated into the pure dark berry fruit with style and class. The palate is smooth and caressing on the entry, building succinctly in the mouth towards a cashmere finish of licorice-tinged dark berries, spices and cloves".
